A common way to treat symptoms of community-acquired pneumonia is by using the antibiotic therapy. However there may be a faster way to cure this ailment and that is by adding virgin coconut oil. According to a study done by Gilda Sapphire Erguiza, M.D., a pediatric pulmonologist at the Philippine Children's Medical Center in Quezon City, Philippines, virgin coconut oil when combined with the antibiotic treatment may relieve a sufferer of the symptoms of pneumonia more quickly. This research was presented at the American College of Chest Physicians last October 30. The results of the research conducted showed that children with pneumonia who were given virgin coconut oil and antibiotics experienced less crackles (a wheezing sound), a shorter time with an elevated respiratory rate and fever, better oxygen saturation in the blood and shorter hospital stays. The hypothesis of Gilda Sapphire Erguiza explains the helpful role of virgin coconut oil in the treatment of pneumonia. The pediatric pulmonologist assumes that the lauric acid component of virgin coconut oil improve the effectiveness of the ampicillin. The antimicrobial properties present in the lauric acid make this possible. An expert in this field, Dr. Daniel Rauch, director of the pediatric hospitalist program at New York University Langone Medical Center said that the result of this study is not yet complete but considers it interesting. He said, "This is a very interesting but small study. “ |
